FGCU and SF Water Mgmt $1.3 million contract to monitor oysters

South Florida water managers approved a five-year contract today with Florida Gulf Coast University to continue monitoring oysters in the lower Caloosahatchee River and San Carlos Bay.

SF Water Management Holds Tax Rate 0.624

The South Florida Water Management District’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2010-11 has one important thing going for it: Property taxes throughout the district’s 16 counties will not be raised.

But because property values in South Florida are depressed, the district will have less money coming in. The proposed budget is $1.1 billion, compared to last year’s budget of $1.5 billion.

Potential good news from the South Florida Water Management District: Its staff will recommend to the governing board at Thursday’s meeting in West Palm Beach that tax rates remain the same.

More than 7 million South Florida residents in 16 counties pay property taxes to the district for flood protection, water supply and environmental restoration.

For most counties, including Lee, the tax rate will be 62.4 cents per thousand dollars of taxable value on a piece of property.
