Cape Coral Property Owners Stormwater Fees Overcharged $540,802

November 8, 2010

http://www.cape-coral-daily-breeze.com/page/content.detail/id/520407.html?nav=5011

Nov-5   DREW WINCHESTER, dwinchester@breezenewspapers.com

A city-initiated inquiry into whether some big property owners were taking unfair advantage of an exemption program for stormwater fees has had an unexpected result – the city actually owes more than half a million dollars in retroactive fees.

Through May 12 of this year, 199 special master case hearings into the exemptions have been heard, according to a document from the public works office dated July 7.

Results of those hearings found not only a number of properties warranted tax breaks for stormwater, but also property owners who didn’t know they were eligible for the exemptions because their properties do not impact the city system.

The retroactive amount granted from those hearings totals $540,802.28.

The new exemption amount granted from those hearings totals $122,265.

Meanwhile, 134 properties lost exemptions totaling $125,437.50, meaning exemptions lost and new exemptions applied are about equal, in total, year over year, officials said.

http://www.news-press.com/article/20101104/NEWS0102/11040400/1075/Bonita-seeks-beach-deal

Bonita Springs City Council members and residents want to compromise with Lee County on a beach parking sticker program.

Barbara Manzo, Lee parks director, will recommend at Tuesday’s county commission meeting that commissioners approve canceling the parking sticker program at Bonita Beach Park’s Access 1 and Little Hickory Island’s Access 10.

The county seeks to raise more revenue to pay for park amenities and increase parking turnover by charging all visitors $2 an hour at Access 1 and $1 an hour at Access 10. Lee parks’ 2010-11 budget is $25 million, down $1.8 million from 2009-10.

Bonita residents would no longer be able to buy $10 annual beach stickers after Dec. 10. The 2010 stickers would be good through the end of the year.

Other Lee County residents would no longer be able to use the $60 annual county beach parking stickers at the Bonita beach parks after they expire a year from when they were bought.
